Volvo Gives the 2011 S60 Sport Sedan Tenacious Traction
Much more grip, much less slip.
Posted By: bv  Posted Date: 6/12/2010

The idea that we’ll someday be able to control the weather still seems relegated to science fiction. Maybe the next best thing is helping a car drive more safely in poor weather – and more enjoyably in all driving conditions. That’s what the 2011 Volvo S60 does.

Today’s younger drivers might not remember a time when, if there was snow on the road, your car’s drive wheels might slip and spin, and the car was not able to move. The introduction of traction control about 20 years ago helped considerably. A more recent development, stability systems, helped to reduce the potential for sliding on dry or slippery pavement, especially when driving through curves. Along the way, more carmakers adopted all-wheel drive to help cars get through just about anything on the road.

As it has in some past models, Volvo brings all of those technologies together in the 2011 S60. Now, however, the technology is more advanced than ever and is combined with Volvo’s three choices of chassis tuning for the S60 - “Touring,” “Dynamic” and “FOUR-C.” That choice allows the S60 driver decide how the car rides and handles. In all cases, the new S60 is simply more fun to drive than before while providing even greater dynamic safety performance.

The “Touring” chassis provides responsive handling while emphasizing a smoother ride on rough surfaces. The “Dynamic” chassis essentially tightens up steering and uses stiffer springs, bushings and dampers (shock absorbers). “You simply have to drive the car to understand, preferably on a narrow winding country road where every sweeping bend brings a new challenge,” says Stefan Sällqvist, who is in charge of S60 chassis development. “That's where the all-new S60 comes into its own and shows off its agility.”

Customers can also specify the “FOUR-C” active chassis for the 2011 S60. This system uses advanced, self-adjusting dampers to respond – in fractions of a second – to the road conditions and the driving situation. The driver can select the car’s ride character from three available modes - “Comfort,” “Sport” and “Advanced.” And here’s a piece of trivia sure to impress at dinner parties (or not): Volvo tested its new chassis tuning on old Roman roads in England, which have received only a few layers of pavement over the centuries.

Whichever chassis setup the S60 customer chooses, the car is designed to grip the road with remarkable tenacity. That’s where the big guns come in - all-wheel drive, Advanced Stability Control and Corner Traction Control.

Volvo's all-wheel drive with Instant TractionTM, developed with all-wheel drive expert Haldex, is designed to ensure the best possible road grip whatever the situation. As you would expect, the system automatically distributes power between the front and rear wheels. When you need a burst of acceleration, the Instant Traction function shifts power from the front to the rear wheels at lightning speed. The extra power at the rear wheels works in concert with the natural weight transfer of a car under acceleration to maximize rear wheel traction. The system works so smoothly that the driver and passengers do not even feel this occurring.

Working with the all-wheel drive is an enhanced version of Volvo’s Dynamic Stability Traction Control (DSTC) system, which incorporates new Advanced Stability Control – the first sedan on the market to do so. That’s a lot of lingo. Here’s what it means for you: the system can now detect and correct conditions that might lead to skidding or sliding even before any such hazard arises.

Not only does Advanced Stability Control help make the S60 a safer-driving car, it also contributes to driving enjoyment. That’s because it allows more dynamic driving (sharper cornering) while acting as a kind of electronic watchdog for the conditions that might spoil the fun.

Speaking of cornering, the S60 debuts a new technology for making cornering smoother and more precise. Corner Traction Control uses what engineers call “torque vectoring,” something turning up on the world’s best sportscars, too. When you drive through a curve, this system can transfer more power to the car’s outer drive wheel. “This system makes it easier to smoothly maintain your desired line on winding roads and on wet surfaces,” says Volvo handling expert Sällqvist.

Come the Fall, you’ll be able to put all this technology to the test. Make it a point to test-drive the S60 – before the bad weather sets in.

New York Auto Show: 2011 Volvo S60

Posted By: BV  Posted Date: 4/5/2010

as repoted by the nytimes march 2010..

What is it? A sleek, four-door sports sedan with a first-of-its-kind pedestrian detection with full auto brake system. (Translation: It can see people and stop the car automatically before you hit someone.) It identifies people using a video camera, has radar and computer controls to sound an alert, flashes warning lights above the dash, and stops the car should you ignore all that.

Is it real? Yes. And in an early demonstration drive last year, even at more than 30 miles per hour, the full auto brake prevented me from hitting a test dummy in a parking lot. Officially, the company promises that it will bring the car to a complete halt and avoid hitting a pedestrian at speeds up to 22 m.p.h.

What they said: “It’s a coupe with four doors,” said Peter Horbury, Volvo’s design chief. Sexy, sleek and “naughty” was how the president of Volvo North America, Doug Speck, described the S60 — one of Volvo’s best sellers in the United States. It’s being pitched as a luxury sports sedan. The company hopes to sell 20,000-30,000 S60s here this year.

What they didn’t say: No one is going to think of a Volvo as being “naughty.” What people will think about is how Volvo will protect its Scandinavian cachet. Between the lines, the company was clearly saying, our new Chinese owners will not touch our designs.

The S60 unveiling is also a somewhat schizophrenic introduction: part new sexy sports car, part safety technology showcase. Can one simultaneously be passionate about generating as much g-force as possible on sharp corners and still be worried about hitting someone in your path? (Shouldn’t you be driving more slowly to begin with?)

The pedestrian crash prevention system will trickle down into other Volvo models and eventually be offered across the line. But it remains unclear how drivers will react to the new feature. Some distracted drivers are likely to end up with a lap full of hot coffee when the auto brake takes over. On the highway, the system will not be able to prevent a collision on its own, and it will be interesting to see whether it helps — or creates — panic situations. There is also the law of unintended consequences, which conjures up images of inebriated frat boys experimenting with the auto braking system on new pledges.

What makes it tick? The all-wheel-drive five-person car is powered by an in-line-6, 300-horsepower engine. (Fun!)

How much? How soon? The S60 will appear in United States showrooms late in the third quarter this year. But with all the sophisticated safety systems, the company isn’t saying what the price will be yet.

How does it look? Volvo continues to round the corners off of its designs. The sedan’s Maserati-like rounded front end is designed to minimize injuries to pedestrians should the driver still manage to hit any jaywalkers. Conversely, its raised rear haunches give the car a more aggressive look.

Inside the all-new Volvo S60
uncompromising quality and sportiness elevated to new levels

Inside the all-new Volvo S60 - uncompromising quality and sportiness elevated to new levels

The interior of the all-new S60 takes Volvo Cars to a new dimension in terms of exclusive quality.

In addition, Volvo Cars' designers have added in excitement, contrast and playfulness to the rational simplicity of Scandinavian design tradition.

"The interior has a more extrovert attitude than before, but without losing any of its practical Scandinavian roots. The all-new S60 brings us up to a whole new level when it comes to the integral experience of colour, form, material and technology," says Volvo Cars' Design Director Peter Horbury.

Scandinavian design is often described with rational adjectives such as functionality, simplicity and clarity. When creating the all-new S60, the design team also added in a modern touch, details that generate excitement, contrast and playfulness.

"In addition, we've taken a significant step forward when it comes to the quality and craftsmanship of the interior. We aimed to make every visible surface, whether leather, metal, wood or plastic, exclusive both to the hand and the eye," says Anders Sachs, who is in charge of colours and materials in the all-new Volvo S60.

The attractive stitching of the upholstery is a good example of the systematic approach to quality. The silk metal frame around the centre console's décor in Charcoal, Shimmer Graphite aluminium or Urbane Wood is another.

"We have had an non-compromise approach when it comes to perfection. Every single detail is of great importance for the total impression," says Anders Sachs.

Uncompromising sportiness with racing inspiration

Volvo's designers obtained their inspiration from the racing track as they pursued their hunt for uncompromising sportiness in the all-new S60.

"A quick glance inside the car is enough for you to feel that this is a Volvo with a totally different dynamic presence than previous models. The racing track's dramatic yet harmoniously flowing lines can be traced in almost every interior detail. It's an interior for all your senses," says Jonathan Disley, head of interior design in the all-new S60.

The graphic character of the racing track is clearly apparent in the instrument panel and in the doors. The lines do not end abruptly but instead create an uninterrupted, continuous flow.

"Every detail looks like it's in motion. All these lines ‘embrace' the driver's cockpit. The instruments and centre stack are angled towards the driver to create a sensation of focus and control. The new dynamic three-spoke steering wheel and the new sports seats with extra side supports are standard. There isn't a single weak point or compromise anywhere in the dynamic approach we adopted from the very beginning," says Jonathan Disley.

The interior of the all-new S60 is lavish in terms of its driver-oriented details, but it is still a five-seater car offering comfortable space for all its occupants. The sculpted outer rear seats give the passenger in the middle welcome side support. Knee space in the rear seat has increased by 30 mm compared with the previous-generation S60.

Beige and black are the main colours of the upholstery range, which is spiced up with the new highlight shade Beechwood Brown - a tan leather upholstery that traces its proud roots to classic Volvo models such as the P1800 ES and 164.

"We wanted to create a colour that feels both classic and timeless but in the same time radiates attitude and character", adds Anders Sachs. "For the all-new S60 we only use it on the surface of the seat, the rest is black. This gives you a floating effect that pronounces the sporty side bolsters. An unmistakable cool and exiting interior option."

Most high-tech Volvo ever

The sporty interior of the all-new S60 is also the most advanced high-tech environment any Volvo driver has ever had access to.

Ground-breaking technology such as Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake takes Volvo's safety dedication yet another step towards the vision of building cars that do not get involved in accidents.

In the field of comfort, there are features such as the optional Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which automatically maintains a set gap to the vehicle in front. What is new is that the Adaptive Cruise Control operates at speeds below 30 km/h, all the way down to standstill.

The all-new S60 can naturally be equipped with parking sensors front and rear and a Park Assist camera at the rear. A camera in the front grille with a 180 field of vision is available as an option. This camera can ‘see around the corner' and helps the driver negotiate blind exits and park with greater safety.

Entirely new Infotainment system

The all-new S60 also gets an all-new Infotainment system where information from the audio unit, navigation system, mobile phone and other functions is presented on a five-inch or seven-inch colour screen in the upper part of the centre console. The screen has a high position to make it easy for the driver to keep his or hers eyes on the road.

All the functions can be controlled from the steering wheel or via controls located directly below the colour screen. In addition there is a separate remote control.

"We have focused firmly on the development of an HMI (Human-Machine Interface) solution that is easy to handle and that does not distract the driver from the main task of driving. The idea behind the technology is that a high percentage of the users will be able to handle the basic functions without having to refer to the instruction manual," says Tomas Ahlborg, Project Director for the all-new S60.

Volvo has conducted several test sessions to evaluate customer responses to various HMI alternatives. Tomas Ahlborg again:

"We are one of the few manufacturers to give the driver access to all infotainment functions via controls in the steering wheel. When it comes to the layout of the centre stack, most of the people in the tests felt that our solution with rotating controls close to the screen is better than a touch-screen for handling the audio system, navigation and phone with minimum possible distraction."

Integrated navigation with voice control is available as an option, as is the possibility of using Bluetooth to connect the driver's own mobile phone to the car's infotainment system.

One of the first cars with MultEQ from Audyssey Laboratories

The audio experience in the all-new S60 has been enhanced compared with previous models.

"Our most advanced system, Premium Sound, has a class-D digital 5x130W amplifier with circuits from Sweden's Anaview, Dolby Digital in combination with Dolby Pro Logic II Surround, the award-winning MultEQ from Audyssey Laboratories and 12 loudspeakers. All this creates an audio experience of absolute world class," says Tomas Ahlborg.

The Volvo S60 is one of the first car models in the world to use Audyssey Laboratories MultEQ technology, the standard for room equalization in the home and professional theatre markets.  MultEQ removes distortion caused by the car cabin's acoustics enabling crisp, clear sound with improved soundstage for everyone in the car.

In addition to the top-of-the line Premium Sound, which comes with a 7-inch screen, the all-new S60 is available with a choice of three other audio systems:

  • Performance - with a 4x20 W amplifier, six loudspeakers and a five-inch screen.
  • High Performance - with a 4x40 W amplifier and eight loudspeakers. This system also comes with five-inch screen.
  • High Performance Multimedia - with a 4x40 W amplifier and eight loudspeakers. This level is combined with the optional navigation system and the larger 7-inch screen.

Volvo's experts do the audio tuning for all audio levels in-house.

Dolby Digital gives perfect concert quality

The all-new S60 offers Dolby Digital that enables the listener to experience compelling surround sound, ensuring excellent audio quality for any Dolby Digital soundtrack. This results in a perfect concert quality when listening to live-recorded music. Of course the system also features Dolby Pro Logic II Surround that transforms ordinary stereo content into rich, full-range surround sound.

In order to further contribute to the best possible individual audio perception, Premium Sound has a special adjustment function. The audio experience can be optimised in three different ways - for the best possible enjoyment in the driver's seat, the two front seats or the rear seat.

The system can play DVDs and CDs with music in MP3, AAC or WMA formats well as AVI and Video Div-X. The system also supports Bluetooth audio streaming (A2DP).

AUX is standard for all audio levels and USB is standard from the High Performance level for hooking up other equipment, such as a portable MP3 player, iPods (from  Generation 3), iPod Touch and iPhone.

From the High Performance Multimedia level, USB is also supporting Video DivX,

Clean Zone Interior gives enhanced comfort

The Electronic Climate Control system, ECC, offers automatic control of both temperature and ventilation. The all-new S60 can be equipped with IAQS (Interior Air Quality System) which prevents particles and unpleasant odours from entering the cabin. To offer highly sensitive passengers even better climate comfort, the system has also been equipped with Clean Zone Interior, a system based on ECC and IAQS. When the car is unlocked using the remote control, the passenger compartment is automatically ventilated if the outdoor temperature exceeds 10 degrees Celsius.

Easily accessible storage space is an important part of interior comfort and convenience. The all-new S60 has a storage compartment behind the centre stack and another in the centre console armrest, while in the door pockets there is space for books, maps and soft-drink bottles and cans. Both the front and rear seat occupants have seat pockets within easy reach.

The rear seat splits 40/60 and the boot opening has been made 107 mm wider than in the previous-generation S60.

"The interior of the all-new S60 is all about innovative design in two areas: form and technology. The design is characterised by sporty freshness down to the smallest detail. The technological aspect includes all those smart solutions that contribute to a driving experience unlike that of any other Volvo - from collision avoidance safety and comfort systems to infotainment and audio excellence of absolute world class," says Tomas Ahlborg.

2011 Volvo S60 with Pedestrian Detection
Official Volvo Cars Video.

Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake is a groundbreaking technological solution. It can detect pedestrians who walk into the road in front of the car, warn the driver - and automatically apply full braking power if the driver does not respond in time.
In an emergency situation the driver first receives an audible warning combined with a flashing light in the windscreen's head-up display. At the same time, the car's brakes are pre-charged. If the driver does not react to the warning and an accident is imminent, full braking power is automatically applied.

2011 Volvo S60 To Debut at 2010 Geneva Auto Show
GOTHENBURG, Sweden — Ten years after its original debut, the revamped Volvo S60 will arrive in the U.S. this fall after its official unveiling at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show.
Posted By: BV  Posted Date: 2/9/2010

The all-new 2011 Volvo S60's exterior design remains true to the S60 concept unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

The main character line flows down the side of the S60 in a gentle wave, complementing the fast roof line. Also note the downward slope of the hood, which allows Volvo to meet pedestrian protection standards without putting on an enormous grille. If you think these lines would look great on a wagon, well, Volvo already thought of that. A V60 wagon goes on sale in Europe next fall (look for it in Paris), but it probably won't come to the U.S. (because we don't buy wagons).

2011 Volvo S60 PictureThe hardware underneath the Vibrant Copper showcar is a shortened version of the S80 platform architecture. The 2011 Volvo S60 remains on the small side of midsize, as it's only 1 inch longer (182.2 inches) than the current S60 with a 2.3-inch longer wheelbase (109.3 inches). It's 2 inches wider (58.4) than before, with a 1-inch track increase up front (62.5 inches) and a 1.7-inch increase in back (62.4 inches).

Weight gain is negligible, as the 2011 Volvo S60 won't put on more than 100 pounds, even with the addition of a six-cylinder engine. Volvo will launch the car with the most potent version yet of its twin-scroll-turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline-6. Look for the T6 to deliver about 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, with the latter coming online at just 1,500 rpm.

A six-speed automatic transmission will be standard fare. Early models will have a Haldex-built all-wheel-drive system as standard, but a front-drive model will be added later in the fall. The 2011 S60 T6 AWD will accelerate to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, says Volvo, on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Of course, there are all sorts of efficient drivetrain options for Europe, including a turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter gasoline four-cylinder, plus a couple of diesels available with a dual-clutch gearbox. None of these are on track for the U.S. market. We've been told, though, that a T5 version of the company's 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo will return "later in the autumn." Expect it to make about 227 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, as in the current S40.

The company will offer three different suspension setups in the U.S. The base suspension will be softer than the standard setup in Europe because of our issues with "freeway hop," we're told. Final calibrations are still being worked out.

Standard for Europe and optional for us is a Dynamic suspension with higher spring rates, stiffer bushings and more rebound damping than on any previous Volvo built from this architecture. Thicker piston rods in the front struts are said to provide a 47-percent increase in stiffness over the S80. The third suspension program is Volvo's Four-C adaptive damping system. You're limited to all-season tires with any of these setups, and they'll range in diameter from 16-18 inches.

Volvo, of course, never forgets its roots, so the 2011 Volvo S60 will also show off the company's latest bit of safety technology, Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake. This is an enhancement of the City Safety collision avoidance system in current cars and employs a front-grille-mounted radar unit and a mirror-mounted camera to detect pedestrians over 31 inches tall.

Famous artist the first to see the new Volvo S60

Posted By: BV  Posted Date: 2/6/2010

Turkish artist Esref Armagan is renowned throughout the world for his unique feel for perspective and shape. He was the very first non-employee to be invited to Volvo Cars in Sweden to see and paint the still-secret new Volvo S60. Although the car will not be launched until 2010, Volvo is already revealing his interpretation on Facebook.

But there is an exciting twist to the story: Esref Armagan is blind.

How can one generate interest in a product that has not yet been launched? That was the challenge given to Lukas Dohle, director of Live Communication and Social Media, and his team at Volvo Cars in Göteborg, Sweden.
The team came up with the idea of inviting renowned Turkish artist Esref Armagan to Sweden and to let him experience the new Volvo S60 and paint a picture of it. The film documenting the S60 blind preview is available on Volvo Car's own website on Facebook, the address is www.facebook.com/volvo. It is also available on YouTube

"Since the car itself is not being launched until the Geneva Motor Show next year, this is a unique way for us to show an extraordinary artist's rendition of the forthcoming model," says Lukas Dohle.

Esref Armagan uses his hands and the rest of his senses to identify the shape of the object he is painting. He has participated in a number of scientific research projects. For instance, TV channel Discovery produced a fascinating documentary in which Professor John Kennedy of Toronto University demonstrates Esref's ability to capture the right perspective. It defies everything that science previously believed about blind people and their perceptive abilities. Esref Armagan has painted everything from historic buildings, seascapes, flowers and forests to a portrait of former US President Bill Clinton.

This, however, is the very first time he is putting a car on canvas!
"It was an honour for me to be asked to do this and I take it as a confirmation of my ability as an artist," says Esref Armagan.

At the Volvo Cars design studio in Göteborg, Sweden, Esref Armagan met design director Peter Horbury. It was a fruitful meeting in which Peter Horbury showed the artist the jealously guarded secret.
"I'm proud of the new Volvo S60. It has a much more dynamic and sculpted form than any previous Volvo - it's a very emotive form. That's why this feels like such an exciting project - introducing our forthcoming model to someone as unusual as a blind artist," says Peter Horbury.

On October 19, the first trailer was made available to 400 blogs globally, offering tantalizing glimpses of the car. It is possible to see and discuss the video on Volvo Car's own website on Facebook. Car enthusiasts could also ask Esref Armagan to draw specific details of the car.

Tolday on October 26, the entire film is available on Facebook. That is the first time the blind artist's interpretation of the new Volvo S60 has been made public.
"It's an amazing experience to work together with Esref Armagan, because he truly embraces life and lives it to the full despite his handicap. It's an approach that exactly matches how we at Volvo embrace life," says Lukas Dohle.
